Dangers Under the Ice

When my children were preteens and we began discussing sex, marriage and children with them they were fraught with questions.  We tried to teach them about abstinence, but it was a foreign word in today’s culture, one they didn’t hear being used around them.

As we went through this process with the children, I remember having some questions of my own for God.  Once I ask Him, “Lord, why did you create us to be sexual beings and then only confine sex to marriage?”  At the time we lived on the Brandywine Creek.  We had a swimming hole and in the winter when the pond froze, we would ice skate.  God answered my question with a question.  “Why does Rich, my husband, test the ice before you can skate on it?”  Well, Lord, because of the unforeseen dangers.  “Yes”, He answered me.  “Sex with multiple partners brings unplanned pregnancy with children out of wedlock and venereal disease; unforeseen dangers to enjoying sex outside of marriage.”

I was so surprised at His answer and His loving way with us.  His plan for us really is good.  Why do we not trust it?  “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11
