New Birth

Here we are in the middle of a March following a snow storm just days ago, but spring is coming!  I know because I saw evidence.  Driving home from work one day last week I saw some yellow flowers popping through in someone’s yard.  My husband also brought in an old, discarded flower pot from last year’s Easter flowers that were sprouting.  I had left it for trash.  It was not in the ground and the pot had endured the cold, wet, harsh winter we had, and yet, it was sprouting a new birth.

Spring is the favorite season of so many people.  It is because it brings new birth.  It brings hope and promise of warmer days and lots of color for our eyes to feast upon.  Personally, it is not my favorite season because it is also our rainy season.  I hate the mud.  I dislike cloudy, dismal days.  However, that is what is needed to bring the flood of pinks, yellows and purples forward out of the cold, hard ground for us to enjoy.

We are so good at marveling at nature.  We love to see the goslings and ducklings waddling around behind their parents.  We had a pair of Canadian geese come back every year and nest in our yard along the creek.  Did you know that these birds mate for life and many come back to the same nesting ground every year to raise their young?  Nature is so amazing!

I wonder though, why we don’t see human life with the same wonder.  Just look at the way we are knit together.  The systems in our bodies: muscular, skeletal, circulatory, etc., that all work together to give us life and breath and a heartbeat are miraculous.

Sometimes we plan for a new little one to add to our family.  And sometimes it is a surprise and totally unexpected.  Sometimes we have to go through some really cloudy days before the arrival and even after the arrival of a human life.  Life can be as messy as winter.  But the end result is still so full of wonder as we see this new birth grow each day into a unique person.  Our lives are forever changed for the better by this new little person who loves us and we love in return.

Our lives are richer and more colorful because of them.  God tells us children are a blessing.  Our quiver is full.  Our lives are blessed because of them.  What a wonder!
